First you Need a Bachelor Degree, then a Masters. I think Doctorate is next ( I only made it to the Bachelors Degrees). I have friends with this type degree. One thing you "may" actually do to finish out, is, you practically write a book on your area of study, History, Science etc. This why we see a lot of books on many subjects. Heck, they had to write it for the Degree, may as well try to make some money off it. ;-)
I remember a friend when he got his PhD in History. I went by his office to congratulate him. I walked in and side; "Doctor I have a pain in my right side". He laughed and said; "I not that kind of Doctor". :-p

If you'd like to teach at college level, you should pursue. If your passion is to be an author who is considered an "expert" you should pursue. If it's to delay entry into the workforce, don't do it. Work experience will help you determine if you really need a Ph.D. to achieve your life goals.
If you're not going to teach or be an author/speaker, I wouldn't do it. The ROI on your time/effort/$$ just isn't there.

That all depends. What degree do you hold now, for starters? Will the doctorate open any additional doors for you? Will it increase your pay significantly? Does the company you work for offer tuition reimbursement? The answers to these questions should help you decide whether or not to go for it. Good luck!
