Check the appliances and lights like everyone else said. Also if you have the circuit breaker switches easily available, make sure you know what each one turns on/off. I've seen apts. with outlets wired into neighbor's panels. If that's the case, someone's getting a free ride off you.

i had the same trouble when i moved into my apartment a few months ago, our bill went from 40 to 90 which was crazy. it turns out that the light bulbs in all of the lights were really high voltage so we changed to energy savers, so you might try that, it cut a good 15 bucks off the bill. also if you've moved to a different town or city the rates may be higher as was the case with us, we moved 12 miles away from our other apt and changed towns. the other thing you can do is call an electrician to come in and look at your setup. good luck

The things that cost the most to run are the water heater(I assume it is elec), furnace, A/C, refrigerator, washer, and dryer. If the appliances are old, that could be the problem.

Also, some elec companies charge a minimum fee for apartments. It is BS, but they do it. All my appliances are new, and everything works well. I have a small apartment, and my ex has the three bedroom house, and I pay the same amount on average as she does. I don't know how that works, but they can do that for some reason.

You may have a connection fee that is causing it to be too high. You could call the electric company about that. Make double sure that you are not getting charged accidently for any dates prior to you moving in. The electric company may have made a mistake and put the bill in your name sooner than they should have.

ALSO, your new place could have some issues: PLEASE replace your heater/AC filter regularly. Some furnaces are terrible with dust, etc. and can cause your heating bill to be higher. You may also have very poor insulation, and may have to take some steps to correct that.

Go find the meter for your apartment read it. Then compare that to what is on your bill.. Sometimes the Elec co makes errors like everyone else. Or if you cant find the meter call the elec co and they should investigate but the more informed you are the better the results.

If the apt. has old appliances (stove, washer, fridge) ect. then that is likely why... otherwise i have no idea.
