I generally feel disgusted that they thought they had a chance. Is this a typical reaction?

Come on, now. I don't say I was disgusted. I mouth the usual conventions - 'I'm flattered, but..'. I was just talking about my private feelings and yours, oh judgemental one.

I don't, I usually feel complemented that they were interested enough to ask me and I know how hard it is to do that, and how crushing it is to be turned down. It makes me feel awkward because I don't want to hurt someone's feelings but I know better than to go out with someone that I don't think I would like to be with.

Wow.... i think you have issues with your own ego. Why would you "hate" someone who expresses an interest in getting to know you or be with you? NOBODY is "all that!"? You are no better than anybody and that is a fact. I'm sure that once that person got to know how self centered and egotistical you are their interest would fade. I know mine would.

No, I think part of it is that you have a giant ego. I mostly feel bad, because they are probably a really nice person, and, hey, I don't want to hurt someone's feelings.

sounds like u are full of it. It took guts for them to ask you out. Fair enough you dont fancy them but there is no need to be like that!! Imagine it is the other way and someone rejects you...!! COuld happen one day!!
