Our 10 month old daughter has not developed the pincer grasp yet and it worries me a little. She can pick up anything, doesn't have any sort of delays in any other areas, but cannot, for instance, get a cheerio from her hand to mouth. Everything ELSE goes to the mouth, like eating a piece of toast, crackers, etc. She CAN pick it up, but she just just uses all fingers and palms it ... she can get it up to her mouth and release it, but drops it. Almost every baby book (gotta HATE those) say that she should have been able to do this (like around 8-9 months), but she just hasn't mastered it. I'm not TRYING to worry or hurry her, but need a little reassurance!!! Thanks!

Oh my God this is why I hate baby books.
Like everyone else said she is fine.
Most developmental milestones overlap by a few months. If she is fine with everything else then she is fine.
She will develop whats known as a "key chuck" grasp first, which is where she uses her first two fingers and her thumb then will narrow it down to the pincer.
Cheerios are pretty small so if you are really worried about it try some activities that start to bring out this skill but was something larger like blocks or those large colored beads. Make it fun for her where she has to drop these items in a bucket and can make some noise with it. The trick is to teach her this skill through play.

Chill out momma. She's fine.

Its possible that it will be something she just doesnt really master until her toddler days. Each child develops differently, I know you know that. Some children dont even crawl, others skip rolling over from one side to another, some skip sitting, some babies take forever to learn to stand and walk, and instead scoot around backwards on their butts until their over a year.

For her brain, and her body, she has found its easier to use what she knows works, than to learn a new skill. At some point she will find that all fingers and palming doesnt work well for a certain activity, and she will develop that little pincer grasp.

Until then, show her how you do it, let her watch you while you pick up cheerios with "little fingers", and play tickle games with little pinchy bird beaks, so she can get the idea of how to work those two fingers together.

Dont push her, just stimulate that concept for her. And let time do the rest. I've actually seen toddlers learning to hold pencils and crayons who REFUSE to use that pincer grasp... lol. Even grad school kids in some cases. They do out grow it. :)

Every baby has different growing times.... Some babies learn things earlier than other babies, sometimes later....
Your daughter is doing wonderful! Don't worry!
She will pick up everything within time, just be patient, don't worry..... there is alot for her to be learning at 10 months :) So maybe shes just relaxing and taking her time :)

I would give her a few more weeks before you start freaking out..... and ditch those baby books.... the only time I read them is to find out things I can do for my baby when they are sick.... but with the development stuff, I won't read it, because every baby is different! You can't tell your baby to do things the way the book tells you, its the baby telling YOU when they want to learn to do stuff :)

Good luck!

you probably dont want to hear this but those books are for worry warts. every baby is different. dont worry, she is fine, if she had trouble with grasping in general, than i would say there is a problem, but those tiny little fingers just hasnt gotten the idea of plate to mouth yet

Every baby is different, some may do things earlier or later than others but dont worry she'll get it might just take her a little while, it sounds like shes trying, thats a good thing.

I would not worry. I think my nephew (who I must say is very smart) did not start doing this til he was around 11 months. My sister used to play a game with him to help it along though. She would say "Whats a crab say?" and then make the pinching movement with her fingers and say "pinch, pinch" pretty soon he was doing it back. All you had to do was say "whats a crab say" and he would do it back. She also did baby sign language with him and I think that helped with his fingers. I hope this helps and try not to worry to much. By the way I hate those baby books. They always freak me out. My husband threw mine away. I have a 3 month old and have been obsesive about her milestones. We mothers can't help it. We just want our babies to be okay.

as a child care assistant i can reassure you your daughter is not behind!!!!! different things take different babies more time than others. you should praise yourself on the fact that she us up to speed with every thing else!!!!

try and encourage her to pick up pencils, paint brushes, spoons and things like that.

at this age children mimic most things you do so sit with her and show her, it could take lots of hour but she will get it.....

your doing a great job!!!!!
