I am lookin for some hosting space and I have been looking around and came across people selling hosting space on eBay for £5.00 unlimited. This seems to be too cheap, and I am wondering what the catch is.

The contention ratio on the servers will be higher, ie. more sites living on the same server, and the likelihood is that the bandwidth available will be much lower, they probably wont have a 24/7 availability guarantee, the better hosting companies guarantee that your site will always be available online due to redundant servers ready to kick in instantly if anything goes wrong.

If you're after decent but not hideously expensive hosting try these guys..

used them a few times for various peoples sites, never ever had a problem with them.

I'm not sure exactly which package on Ebay you have been looking at, but I have just done a search and found a "typical" host there advertising an "unlimited package" for about £5.

What they are actually offering is:

Unlimited Disk Space
5 Hosted Domains (Host 5 websites on one plan)
Unlimited subdomains ([yoursite].oneofyourdomains.com)
5 GB Data Transfer/Bandwith
Unlimited E-Mail accounts

The catch there is the 5GB Bandwidth which is, in hosting terms, next to nothing.

Bandwidth is the amount of data (web pages, pictures etc) you can transfer from your host to the user in a given time period - normally this is expressed as an amount per month (note in this instance they are not actually saying a time period, so it could be 5GB a month, a year... anything really)

In many ways bandwidth is the most important factor when choosing a host, and if you reach you limit you could find that they simply don't allow you any more (effectively "turning off" your website) or charge you an exorbitant rate for every little bit extra you use.

If we give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they mean 5GB per month, this is still a very low amount. Compare that to the 2100GB I get every month from my hosting company, for around £5 / month!

Frankly, I wouldn't recommend this deal to anyone. Shop around, and whilst you will pay a little more you will get much better value for your money - not to mention getting something that actually works!

There are many great web hosts out there that won't charge you a fortune but will provide you with a top quality service. As with any service, a personal recommendation from a satisfied customer is always valuable, so ask about.

There's a link to my current hosts below that you can check out if you like - I would certainly highly recommend them, and have had no problems since switching to them a little while ago.

Well it's probably a catch. You either get hardly any storage space, or read the small print as they might not include any bandwidth and charge a fortune for bandwidth used. Personally, I think if it seems to good to be true then it is!

Seems a bit cheap, any idea what you get for that. It may just be able to handle html and not more advanced things like php, sql etc

Ask them and read the small print!
