I usually wear yoga pants with t-shirt type tops or crop tops with a hip sash, and sometimes a full, light-weight skirt. I tend to wear longer tops during winter and shorter ones during summer. Other dancers in our troupe often wear leotards, yoga pants, leggings, or bike shorts with similar tops. Some like to wear skirts, while others don't usually wear them. It depends upon what we're doing during a class, and sometimes just one's mood. Most in our troupe wear hip sashes much of the time. I've occasionally used a shawl as a hip sash for a different look. You just want to make sure it's not too long and that you're able to tie it securely around your hips. Some fabrics may be slippery and don't always stayed tied very well. Footwear depends upon the surface. Dancing barefoot is good, as it keeps you grounded. I usually wear half sole sandals, or foot thongs. http://www.discountdance.com/ has some and there are other sources. I like the barefoot look with them while they protect my feet on hazardous surfaces and from broken glass beads.

Whatever you choose to wear make sure that you are able to move easily and comfortably in it. You may feel self-conscious now, before you go to the class. Once you have been taking classes awhile, you may find that you are more comfortable with your body and opt for different types of practice outfits. Most belly dancers that I know are not waif-like at all. Many are quite full-figured. The dance can help you learn more about your body and become much more comfortable with it. I hope you enjoy your class.

You can wear a stretch top or a comfortable bra, long skirt and a simple hip scarf with coins. This is enough for classes.

I think that is better to use a long skirt because you get used to it during your classes, and if you want to make a show some day, being used to a long skirt will avoid you stepping on it and causing and embarassing accident.

If you are not so comfortable wearing just a skirt, you can wear a short under your it.

When you make a show, it will require a better and more professional costume.

Good luck.

a stretchy top and a long, wide skirt.
the skirt should be elastic so you can pull it down
onto your hips.
sometimes they get on the floor for certain exercises
so maybe tights or leggings or stretchy shorts under
the skirt. -a leotard if you have one. most folks will wear a hip scarf, but beginners
usually don't have one. for class usually you don't wear
anything with coins that makes noise because it's
distracting and people can't hear the teacher.
students often enjoy wearing a crop top so they can see
their midsection better. usually it is done barefoot but
some floors work better with socks or slickish shoes.
but you will slowly acquire the things you want to wear to
class (and for performing)...everyone knows you will not have them at first.

You should be confident. Stretch marks are natural and considered beautiful as well because it reflects your determination to change.
