Apart from the obvious ones of flexibility and freedom and getting to see more places, can anybody come up with anything else please? All help accepted.

You save a lot of money on taxis, airport shuttles, tips for drivers and the like. You don't have to lug all your purchases/souvenirs around with you for the entire day. There's air conditioning in hot climates, heaters in cold and shelter from rain so you don't end up getting soaked like you would if you were walking everywhere. You can have a jacket/umbrella along with you as a precaution and don't have to lug it everywhere while sightseeing. You don't have to wait for buses, trains, etc or get lost while using them. You also have a place to sleep if you're tired from playing tourist all day.

I always hire a car on holiday for flexibility because i usually tour but even if you are in the same hotel for a week its nice to come and go as you please and get back when you please. When i do go in my own car to Northen Europe etc i will say there is an advantage to acting the stupid tourist when driving about because you can cut in at traffic queues and use the wrong lane etc by looking bemused and lost and parking is easier as well.

If it's a car hire service that comes with a driver who is a national of the country you are holidaying, he knows the directions to everywhere as compared to you driving in a foreign unfamiliar country and having to keep asking for directions.

saves you paying for trips through your reps, and trust me you can do most of the organised trips yourself for at least half of what they charge and you can do it in your own time rather than waiting for people to move out of your way while you try and take a photo without a kid running past you every 5 seconds!

You get to experience driving in a foreign country which will improve your driving when you get home!

No queuing at the airport as the coach transfer drops off 100 people at once, you can set off 10 minutes earlier and beat the husstle to get to the front of the check - in desk!

It's great!

The only vehicle that can get to more places than a 4x4 is a hire car!

cars can overheat badly when stuck in holiday holdups, if it does overheat blowing up engine or just some damage to engine or any other probs, thyis is going to hit ur holiday budget hard, where if it is a hire car from a national company like avis or hertz who will simply replace car for you.

driving in strange places increases stress, accidents are more likely.newer cars are less likely to break down, and also you can choose a car for 2 weeks that you normally can`t afford,so you can impress people into thinking you own it.
