I personally wouldnt. The shells will slowly desolve and raise the ph. making the water more hard and alkaline.
Read this site on red ear sliders, they are high maitenance and expensive to keep healthy.

I have two terrapins, they make wicked pets!! They are not expensive to keep, but are expensive to set up. They also can be time consuming. They also grow very fast and get very big!! Mine was the size of a fifty pence piece last year on Xmas eve, now she is bigger than a can of coke!!!! They need a big basking area with a uv light. They also need lots of room to swim in. I ve seen the results of a turtle that isn't looked after properly. Watch out for their little nips too, when they bigger they can take a chunk outta ya finger!!!

Shells are not usually big enough to be good basking sites, and tend to hold dirt and such pretty easily. Otherwise, no real concerns with turtles.

Swing by www.austinsturtlepage.com or http://www.redearslider.com for good care info on this species.
