I think you said it shouldn't be a Mac.

If you need a Windows based laptop, just about anything you can get from Best Buy, Circuit City, Costco, etc should be just fine. Unless you will be using the lap top for high end games, video, or photo editing, yo don't really need a top of the line product. Just do some comparison shopping with major features - RAM, hard drive size, screen size - and see what's out there in your price range. Odds are you can get one to suit your needs for $600-$800.

nicely in case you wait you would possibly want to get one with Vista preloaded and save money on the improve, till they offer a loose improve. You gotta watch the improve direction. i don't believe of they're going to improve XP homestead to Vista top price for loose, although they could XP professional to Vista top price. also in case you wait you'll discover how the computer runs with Vista somewhat of basically guessing. you may favor to run Vista top price with each and each and every of the interest sweet and which will take better computer as in images card to run it. on the different hand in case you get an XP computer after Vista ones are out, perchance you would possibly want to get one at clearance when you consider that they'd nicely be attempting to get rid of them. be sure you recognize which Vista version you want to run earlier finding out on!
