It means that if the end benefited people and is good, then whatever ways you used to obtain it , is justified. Just like what Robin Hood deed, he stole money from the rich to benefit the poor people. So then end ( poor people benefiting) has justified the means (stealing).

Sometimes one must use a questionable way to obtain the desirable goal hence the end justifies the mean.

It means that it doesn't matter what you do to reach your goals, so long as they're reached.
For example, someone who says it was okay to bomb a children's hospital because we also killed a lot of double agents believe the end justify the means.
Simply translated:
"The end" (What eventually happens) "Justifies" (makes it okay) "The means" (What you did)

This means that the result in the end is so great, that whatever means you go about in getting to that result are justified.

It was said by Machiavelli in his book 'The Prince'. It is a phrase encompassing two beliefs:
Morally wrong actions are sometimes necessary to achieve morally right outcomes.
Actions can only be considered morally right or wrong by virtue of the morality of the outcome.

I want to be manager. I lie about the other workers, make them look bad, so I can get promoted. I say to myself it is OK because it got me what I wanted.
