I have a spotted green puffer, and i'm pretty sure he is dying. Two of my other fish in the tank had ick so i treated it, and it's still there. But my puffer was fine until yesterday night. He looks very sick. He can't use one side fin, and just floats w/ the water current, or sits on the bottom of the tank. I'm very worried about him. Any suggestions on how to get him better? or not let him die? would it help to put him in a seperate plase for awhile? any suggestion please.

It sounds like he is probably about ready to die. Fish are very adept at acting like everything fine until the very end; it's a defence mechanism.

Do you keep him in brackish water? Green spotted buffers are brackish water fish, and they are also solitary fish. Ideal conditions would be a brackish tank all to themselves, as they can overly aggressive and overly shy with other fish.
What have you been feeding him? His diet should be made up of crustaceans like mussels and snails, and well as meaty foods like bloodworms.

That is what a green spotter puffer needs to be healthy, so provide him with these conditions and hope for the best.

You can not use traditional ich medicine with puffers. Puffers are a scaleless fish, and are much more touchy than scaled fish. It sounds like you did the damage to him with the medication. You should really research your fish before buying them. You have to watch with your puffers also if you move him to quarantine. Puffers get stressed out much easier than other fish. I would leave him where he is, do a 50% water change, and replace your activated carbon to start getting the medication out of the water. Most likely the damage is done though, and he will die. Next time do your research before you buy. Also use an acclimation tank. That way you can treat any new fish you buy before introducing them into your tank. There is no excuse for introducing ich into a tank with puffers. They need much more care than other fish. Please read up on them before buying another.

What kind of ich meds have you been using? Puffers are scaleless fish and most ich meds hurt them.

For puffers, treat ich with 1 tbs salt for every gallon of water. I don't know if that is what you have done or not, it's just an idea that may or may not help.

And to PeeTee, are you talking about green spotted puffers or South American puffers? South American puffers are full freshwater. Green Spotted puffers are like salmon, they are born and live their juvenile lives in freshwater, as they grow bigger, they move to brackishwater, then to full marine. In the aquarium these conditions must be replicated in order for the fish to live a full life.

Zoe missed on this one, your puffer in not a brackish water fish,I personally saw one netted at the mouth of the Rio Branco,1600 kilometers from any salt water. They may survive in brackish water, but it certainly isn't necessary to their survival.I seem to recall something about Ich medications being bad for puffers, but I can't find the reference right now. Not much help, and curing a tank of Ich involves a lot more than just adding meds. Good luck.PeeTee
