I have hypothyroidism, and they didn't find out until AFTER the baby was born. I had severe preeclampsia. I am getting ready to get pregnant again, and am on synthroid, but still worry that preeclampsia could happen again, earlier and more severe.

Should I look for a "high risk" obgyn this time?

Please don't tell me to see the doc....I am going to my doc this afternoon. I just want to hear the experiences of other women or their families.

Thanks!

I am hypothyroid as well, and didn't find out until after my daughter was born and I just couldn't lose the weight, had no energy, yadda yadda. I also had preeclampsia in the last several weeks of my pregnancy and was induced at 37 weeks.

I hated my OB, the man was terrible and had the bedside manner of a rat. I have since switched Ob's and asked this nice doctor a million questions in regards to the preeclampsia issue.

I was told by him that alot of first pregnancies end up toxic (read health issues for the mother, ie preeclampsia, etc), and that a bad first pregnancy does not automatically equate to another high risk pregnancy the 2nd time around. Granted you do have an elevated risk of preeclampsia, but it's not a 99%, gonna have it, you can't avoid it thing.

I wouldn't think synthroid would keep you from getting preeclampsia the second time around, but I would think it would totally help in regulating all the body functions that it is supposed to and possibly make the pregnancy a little easier.

I hope this helps a bit, and good luck to you!

Unfortunately, no matter what the circumstances there is no saying for sure when and if you get preeclampsia. I have had it twice, the first delivering at 27 weeks and the second 25 weeks. If I were you I wouldn't see anybody BUT a perinatologist. And, be choosy with your specific one. My regular OB/GYN was imsulted when I told him I would be going to one when I was ready to get pregnant again, but with both pregnancies, he had to refer me to one when the preeclampsia hit. It's just not worth going to a "regular" ob/gyn when you know your pregnancy isn't "normal."
Good luck
