Don't think of it as one big job or you will never get started because you won't know where to start.
Instead, break it up into little jobs and make a game of it
such as
After I pick up every dirty dish, I will sit and watch a little tv (or listen to a favorite cd)
then...
After I pick up all of the dirty clothes, I will go get myself a treat from the pantry
then...
After I pick up any trash lying around and throw it away, I will take a nice long nap
I swear this will work, good luck!
(I HATE housework!)

Do what I did and meet a wonderful woman, fall totally in love and after a lifetime of being a total slob change your ways in order to make her happier.
If that doesn't work for you - or you need a quicker solution - the only way is to break it into little tasks and achieve them.
Take out all the coffee cups and wash them up - job done.
Put all your laundry in the laundry basket - job done.
Put on a wash and make your bed - job done.
You may not get everything done in 1/2 hour or a day or whatever - but your flat will certainly look a little better after an hour than it did before - some small successes can be really motivating.
And good luck!

You can do anything for 15 minutes. Go and get a plastic grocery bag, look down at your feet and pick up the closest pieces of rubbish (trash) to your feet, then put the rubbish in the bag, when the bag is full, tie the handles together and put it in the rubbish bin (trash can). After you have done this for 15 minutes give yourself a pat on the back, take a break and look up the site below:-

This website has amazing tips and instructions for decluttering you home, and its all for free. You deserve to live in a comfortable and clean flat, and you can make it happen. Best wishes.

Can you get a mate round to help? I have the same problem, my family helped me have a blitz on it and it felt so much cleaner for a few days...
Tackle the things you can - wash up, put clean clothes away & wash the dirty ones. Put away everything you can. Men are terrible for leaving out jars & things every time they eat.
The other jobs, set yourself a time limit, say half an hour, & then do something else. Or do one cupboard or a couple of shelves every day. Be ruthless about getting rid of anything you haven't used/worn for 12 months, or anything you don't like.
Put some good music on, turn off the computer and get out that duster!

It probably seems like an overwhelming task but if you just concentrate on one room at a time, the resulting satisfaction from getting that one tidy will encourage you to do the rest. Don't expect too much in one day & it will gradually get better, I find that having some music on help's.

Lol! I like Badneighbor's suggestion. But, if you can't find the motivation to clean it all at once, just do as I do. I pick up here and there when I'm up, anyway. For example, when you get up to use the loo, pick up a few things along the way. If you do this every time, then it will be clean in no time!

Log onto flylady.net This website truly changed my life! No lie. She tells you to start with something small like keeping your kitchen sink clean and believe me it just radiates from there. I had a house cleaning problem and to look at my house now you'd never know it. It's very easy to follow. It doesn't just focus on the cleaning either it helps you to declutter. The best thing is she's teaches you to do it 15 minutes at a time! You can do anything for 15 minutes.
Please try it you'll be happy you did
Good Luck and God Bless

Go buy some decorative knick-knackery.
I've never been able to motivate myself to clean up a place that still looks lousy even when it's sparkling clean. Just something like painting the trim might help.
And, robots are your friend. Get a Roomba or Scooba.

Been there...Too much to even find a place to start and if you move something where to put it...
Start with the easy stuff. Grab a garabage bag and pick all the stuff you can that you can take out directly to the dust bin. Usually this creates a significantly more workable space that is less overwhelming.

Ask a friend to help you, the two of you can do wonders in no time! When my best friend has a big party at her house, I always go back the next day to help her blitz the house and she is so grateful because something that would have taken her 5 hours took her just 2 hours with my help. mmm... 'I get by with a little help from my friends'....mmm....mmm
