depends on the computer, the operating system

if everything is working OK then usually there is an option that selects either Shutdown, Reboot/Restart OR change user/Log Out

if the machine has lcoked up then on a windows system presing down the following keys together shoudl do the trick CTRL ALT DEL
or
Control Alt Delete

some computers have a reboot button, usually smaller than the power on/off button

if that fails then there is always the option of pulling the plug, and then reconnecting (after around 10..15 seconds)

however the later options should only be done as the last resort, it is posisble to corrupt data and cause hardware problems if you kill thge computer whilst it is still working. power off should be treated ONLY as a last resort in dire emergency

if your PC is frozen then it is best to use what used to be known as a 'soft boot'
A 'hard boot' which means switching the power off is the last resort.

To perform a 'soft boot' press AND HOLD DOWN the three buttons Control Alt and Delete at the same time, if you simply press these three without holding them long enough you will pull up a window showing 'running processes'.

If this happens you might be able to 'unfreeze' your computer by stopping the running process which has frozen your computer assuming you have an idea what it is. Otherwise just press the three buttons again to shut the computer down.

Leave for 10 seconds before restarting.

reboot means turn off and re-start.

A soft restart/reboot is cntr+alt+del or start>shut down

a hard reboot is holding in the power button until the machine stops, or tripping the power switch or un-pluging it.

In all cases press the power button (as usual) to turn on.

soft reboot is preferable to a hard reboot as a soft reboot may well save your work, a hard reboot will always loose any unsaved work.

The term reboot comes from the concept of 'pulling one self up by the boot straps' and involves the computer accessing the boot sector of the harddrive.

Reboot is just another word for "restart". Just shut the computer off, wait a couple seconds, and turn it back on. That's it.

If it has crashed you can hold the power button in for 4 seconds and it will shut down. Then start as normal but may get a scan disk starting to check your hard drive is ok just let it check your hard drive and when its finished you will be fine it may take a while though

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

Shut it down and then start it up again. You can also use the restart option when you shut down.

Click Start, then click "Turn off Your Computer" and click "Restart". It will restart and you will have to log back on.
