Read this-

http://www.google.com/help/basics.html

Here you'll get all the instructions.

A sample:
"Choosing the right search terms is the key to finding the information you need.

Start with the obvious – if you're looking for general information on Hawaii, try Hawaii.

But it's often advisable to use multiple search terms; if you're planning a Hawaiian vacation, you'll do better with vacation Hawaii than with either vacation or Hawaii by themselves. And vacation Hawaii golf may produce even better (or, depending on your perspective, worse) results."

1. Click on this blue link: http://www.google.com
2. Type your search terms into the box
3. Click "Google Search"

You probably also have a search box in the top, right corner of your browser. You can enter the search terms directly in there too.

so, first you have to have clear in mind what are you looking for
secondly you find the key words regarding your topic and thirdly you insert the keyword to a popular search engine
www.yahoo.com
www.google.com
www.altavista.com
etc...
and from the results you choose the best suited for your needs.
Generally it's on the first pages, you don't have to look everything.
Actually you never do it, you just try a more appropriate key word.
:-)

Well, there are actually a couple of methods of searching and several browsers and search engines to choose from while doing so. Each search engine can bring up different results, so it is a good idea to do multiple searches for the same item with different engines. Also, some engines are good for specific types of searches, such as the Weather Channel for, well, the weather, Wikipedia for all types of internet related objects, issues and definitions, eBay for products, and Google and MSN for many items, just to name a couple as examples.

There are currently two most popular Browsers, Internet Explorer, and FireFox. Both are great, and which one you wish to use depends on your personal preferences as you try them out. You can have both installed on your system with one set as the default, but with the ability to switch to the other when desired is simple.

Each Browser will have multiple BHO-Browser Helper Objects, which are installed by choice and enhance the browsing experiance offering such things as the ability to view and hear multi-media, assist in accessing web based mail such as easy sign-in or logon of sites you wish to participate in with more depht, and other extensions. Each browser also can have what is referred to as Browser Add-Ons, which include Active X controls, and other functionality.

Now, I use Internet Explorer 7 exclusively. IE7 has the ability to quickly select search engines, save favorites into organized folders, access RSS Feeds quickly and easily, hides the main menu items if desired, and has the ability to open multiple windows and save them as a "collection" in the favorites and open them all at once when desired or just one of the tabs if that is what is desired, among other great features. I also selected to install the Google Toolbar, the YahooToolbar kept crasing my browser regardless of how many different instances I attempted to install and use. My husbands computer has both the Google and Yahoo Toolbars and they work just fine for him, so it is odd it won't in mine. I really like the Yahoo! Toolbar, especially for the function of easily managing and creating disposable addresses right at a site I want to use one for, but oh well, I have to go through it the difficult way instead. Sorry, I got off track here.

Now, as for "steps" I can only outline the basics for you and you will need to access the help options offered by a few of the search engines such as Yahoo, or Google, and learn all of the ins and outs of effective search techniques. Both of these engines have extensive help on the subject, you just need to access it via there help link on a page of a search, or as for Yahoo, access via a link in Yahoo Mail, or any other service you may be using by Yahoo!

1. Open the Browser by one of several methods: A: Click the
Icon on the Quick Launch Toolbar on the TaskBar. B: Click
Start, then click the Icon on the Start Menu. C: Double Click
the Icon on the desktop. D: Click your mail icon on any of the
Messengers you have installed on your system, which then
allows you to access the Search Portols.

2. Once you have the browser open, whichever method chosen
you need to decide how you need to search. If you have an
address for a site, just type in the address in the top search
box and hit Enter. That website will appear in the browser.
If you don't know what site you wish to go to, you need to use
search terms of the items or issue you are looking for to find
related sites that may take you to what you are seaking. The
search terms can be extreamly complicated shorthand, or
as you are new, just a simple word or phrase of what you are
seaking, such as, "automotive technology", "Malmute dogs",
"orange juice", or the name of a program, file or other object,
such as, "hiddenfile.ico" to discover what that is, when a
strange item shows up in your system. These are just a
very few of the millions of items and issues you can search
for on the web.

3. Now, depending on what you are looking for, you need to
decide what engine you think would do the best job, and then
select it before the search. In IE7, at the upper right hand
corner of the browser is a search window. To the right of that
is a drop down menu. In the search window the current
default engine is listed in very shaded wording. If you click on
the icon for the drop down menu which is a small arrow, a list
of your the engines you selected to use will appear, you just
select one, or you can choose to add more by clicking the
"Find more providers" link on the menu. When you do this, a
new window will open with dozens of search engine option of
which you can select to have installed on the drop down menu

4. Now, when you perform your search, you can easily open
multiple windows by clicking the scroll wheel on your mouse
while on a link. Another method is to click open a new Tab, by
clicking on the small tab right on the left of the open tab. This
will give you a page which says "You've opened a new tab"
and you then go through the normal actions of starting a new
search with either an address or search terms. This way you
are able to keep the material in the other tab available without
having to open a new browser instance. This action makes it
possible to gain many tabs without using a heavy amount of
computer processes, which opening a new browser instance
would create. It is very handy in my opinion. I can be down-
loading a file in one tab while still working in other tabs.

5. To save a search, simply click on the star with a green star
on top icon in the lower upper left side of the browser. You
click on that icon, and a menu of options appears. Select the
one which says, "Add to favorites" or "Add Tab Group to the
Favorites" and a dialog box will appear giving you the ability to
save just in the main favorites list, or place it into a folder you
created at a previous time, or create a new folder for the new
items. I have several folders for different items, such as my
Microsoft Websites with technical information regarding how
to use and configure Windows XP, Trouble shooting sites
Microsoft Knowlege Base articles etc. I also have a links file
which I can open from my taskbar and quicly access the
most important items I have interest in. If I want to remove a
saved website, I just right click and then select delete, or I
open the option to manage my favorites. It is very simple
once you get use to it.

6. To obtain RSS Feeds, simply click on the RSS Orange link
which indicates the page has an RSS link, and you can at
that time sign up for the RSS Feed and it will then be placed
right beside the favorites for simple and easy access. These
RSS Feeds provide real time news about all sorts of issues,
news and alerts about items that interest me, or I use for my
research.

These are all very basic search steps and each of us has to use what we personally find usable and of interest. Searches can be very detailed and can find anything which has ever been posted on the web. However, it does take some learning of how to put together the strings needed to work extensively with search engines. There are those who have professional grade experiance and knowlege of how to utilize the search engines to do searches which will bring results that would amaze many folks. They can locate personal information on individuals and detectives use it like pros. Corperations employ individuals who have strong abilities in search engines in order to do background checks on prospective employees or to locate information on their charactor. If a person ever did any type of nudity online, these folks can find it regardless of how long ago it was posted. It is a rather scary concept, but it is simply a fact of life these days. Kids need to be very carefull what they post regarding their personal lives as it will come back to haunt them.

Anyway, I do tend to get off subject at times, but this is the basic idea of how to search and what can be accomplised with searches and search engines. I wish you much success in your endevours and learning how to utilize the search engines. Have a great day.
