This isn't a partisan question, I'd be just as upset if it was a Democratic president saying not to show them. I simply think that the people who die fighting for this country should at least have a somber, heroic return, instead of being shuffled in quietly, like their death was no big deal.

ArkieBoi - I get what you're saying, and I don't necessarily think it would be an issue. They show footage of our soliders returning in Canada, and I haven't heard of anyone taking advantage of it. I believe it could be done tastefully.

Respecting our soldiers is an obligation to all us.
These men and women, who've died in war, should be revered and shown proper respect.
And everyone of them deserves an honored return to the United States, in flag covered coffin and we should all know their names.
Whether the war is right or wrong - those who fight deserve the honor and respect of one who has died for our country.
To do otherwise is to demean them, their families, and the sacrifices they have all made.
I won't go off on the politics of why they aren't being given the honor they deserve.

There's a song playing on Country Radio stations where the artist is saything that things like showing soldiers' coffins and showing the devastation caused by terrorist attacks is not being shown because it would only enflame hatred against the enemy. The singer says, and I agree, that maybe that's exactly what's needed. Let's face it, the average American viewer seems to have the attention span of a ferret so they need a bit of remining once in a while as to what this fight is all about; OUR SURVIVAL!

I lived through the Viet Nam war. We say the soldiers getting blown up every night over dinner on the national news. The poor Viet Nam vets got harassed when they came home and had to get out of their uniforms for fear of being attacked by USA citizens. I think it is disrespectful to the soldiers and their loved ones to show the caskets. There was one group who were even protesting at fallen soldier's funerals, and that made my stomach turn. I wish this wouldn't be happening just like everyone else. We know our young men and women are dieing--3,014 and 22,834 wounded. Go do something at the VA Hospital for the wounded.

you do realise this is a delliberate ploy by the government? The media won't show the coffins because the govt tells them not to. The govt is terrified that the nation would rise up and demand the troops come home, which is what would happen. The soldiers' deaths are being swept under the carpet - and I think you Americans should all start thinking about what happens to those soldiers who survive but come back crippled. This is another Vietnam that your country has created.

The thing is, in my opinion...regardless of whether we were doing well in a war, to visualize the toll of deaths that take place is not a good thing for support or morale. Do you know how many deaths have accumulated in this last excursion? How many deaths took place in WW2? Vietnam? A lot. To depress the masses is not what the government wants to do--that would be counter to their cause...especially in cases where a war is truly warranted. They do get formal burials and are remembered in a variety of ways...and their family members are usually present. Its more personal.

I think it's important to remind the American people what the cost of the war really is. It has nothing to do with profits for oil company executives or raising the level of our credibility in the world, it's human beings — husbands, wives, lovers, fathers, mothers, children. Bush has sent thousands of patriotic Americans to their deaths for what? Oil! The war on terror is a joke. We created more terrorists simply by staying in Iraq this long. Yes, I think we need to see the coffins, so we know deep down what this all really means.

Yeah I totally agree with you... it is sad, but its a typical PR move from a politician (again not partisan, would expect that from many if not most). I would say it is even more sad that we would probably not elect someone with the decency to not worry about PR and do what is right.

I think it's kind of morbid to show coffins. Since I was a kid, I was afraid of them. Showing them dead won't really show that we respect them. I think we show them more respect by not further disturbing them and just letting them be in peace instead.

I agree with you. It is a cowardice of republican party that we are seeing. They believe we aren't strong enough to debate the war, much less see anything bad about it.
