I think there were three basic kinds: the large ones which were self supporting and which gave background light to a large room; the smaller ones which people carried around with them as they moved about in the dark; and the candelabra type, which were suspended from above. They were commonly made of pewter, iron and brass.

Wrought iron usually. Quite often very structured, i.e symetrical. Decorative holders usually depicted plants or vines.
