I put a thick layer of rock salt around my property and haven't seen a snake in three years, but i had to kill any snakes that were already inside the ring. Most of them met there demise with my lawnmower

snakes will come for one thing, food. if they are in your yard, so is their food. i.e. mice, moles, etc. if you want the snake to go away, you need to get rid of the food. either with a good hunter (cat), or some other poisoned bait.
i may suggest working on your fear of snakes, though. provided they are not poisonous snakes, there are many benefits to having them around (see above). they control the rodent population. not nearly as well as a cat (cats kill for fun most of the time, snakes only eat about once a week).

Get an owl statute... you can usually get the plastic ones that look realistic at places like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.
Owls are natural enemies of a snake. Perch it on top of a fence post, or anywhere it can be easily seen by a predator on the ground.
Good Luck.
