What is the usual price of a can of coke in say... your average grocery store, in Montreal ?

If you're curious as to why I'm asking, Its just my way of estimating how expensive a country is.

tax is 14% here. We have a tax on our tax.:-)
I don't buy 1 can at a time. I usually pay $4.99 for a 12 pack of diet coke. They are $1.14 if you buy one at a time.

Carbonated soft drinks are taxed as junk food in Quebec and so are more expensive than in the States. Some other foods (many fruits, including American citrus, for example) are often somewhat cheaper. Dairy and chicken is considerably more expensive because of market control systems (like the USA has on its citrus). Hotels are generally cheaper in Quebec than comparable accommodations in the USA. Electric power is far less expensive. Houses and rents in Montreal are also considerably cheaper than they are in comparable American cities. Clothes more expensive.
Alcohol also more expensive even though Quebec has lowest beer prices in Canada. And so on.

In other words, comparing the price of Coke will only tell you the comparable price of Coke, nothing more. But as a general rule higher Canadian and Quebec taxes make the total average cost of living about 10% higher than the average in the States, but we receive far more services - not just free health care (just visit any suburban or Montreal branch library and compare to an average American suburban or city branch library, for example). And Canadians enjoy more income equality.
