Transgendered is a term for when a person has fully (surgically or hormonally) changed their genitals from that of their birth gender, and fully live in their desired gender. It's technically not the same as being gay/lesbian/bisexual, but it's easier to put all things dealing with sexuality into the same category on things such as this forum I suppose.

An umbrella term used to describe anyone whose gender identity or expression situates them differently than the traditional societal gender role they were assigned at birth. Some of the countless categories lumped together under this term include :

Crossdressing
DRAG
Transgenderism
Transsexualism
androgyny
and many varitations between these larger groupings.

[adjective] Should be used to describe someone, not to label them as an object -- as a noun. Iincorrect usage: "I saw three transgenders walking out of Nordstrom yesterday."
Correct usage: "I saw three transgendered people walking out of Nordstrom yesterday."

To have a cross-gender identity in one form or another.

Originally, this word meant what are also known as full-time crossdressers or nonsurgical transsexuals, people who live and work in the [other] (of their physical anatomical) [sex], continuously and for always. Now it also means the group of all people who are inclined to cross the gender line, including transsexuals, crossdressers, and gender benders together. This is the main way the word is used today, and is referred to as the "umbrella definition as it covers everyone. A few [people] use the word transgender incorrectly as a synonym for transsexual.

It's when a girl thinks she's actually a boy in a girl's body. That her breasts and her genitals shouldn't be there.

Or when a boy thinks he's really a girl in a boys body and that his penis and testicles shouldn't really be there but that breasts should.

Some transgendered individuals try to get their bodies changed as far as possible to make it as near as possible to that of the gender they would like to be. It's generally more successful in making a male body look like a female one -- it's possible to remove the testicles and give heavy doses of estrogens which alone may create real breasts. It is also possible to create fairly natural genitals with even a reasonable approximation to a vagina. Of course there is no womb and no ovaries.

Going the other way, removal of the ovaries and giving heavy doses of testosterone creates natural beard growth and body hair, heavier musclature and a deeper voice. However nobody's ever succeeded in making an even moderately realistic penis and male ejaculatory function isn't possible. Most just settle for an enlarged clitoris with no urinary provision.
