This is used as a probing question to get around some of the "illegal or innapproriate questions."
i.e. you shouldn't ask if they're married, religous affiliations, kids, age, etc. but most interviewees will spout that info out with the tell us about yourself question.

So, use this time to shine if you think any of the above will help. If you are interviewing with your potential boss and you know he attends a certain church you can mention that you attend services there, same for kids if his go to a certain school, then maybe your's go there as well.

You probably won't be able to "make a connection," with the boss and chances are you'll be interviewing with an HR person anyway, so don't answer with the common answers, you want to set yourself apart from the other applicants.

Say something really interesting about yourself, then talk about some of your proudest moments. (don't say I'm a people person, everyone says that)

Generally 2-3 minutes are given to you for answering this question. Being brief and precise helps in making a good beginning for an interview. The answer should tell little about yourself - your qualification, experience, skills and hobbies.

This question is generally asked to initiate an interview. Be confident say in brief about your self and the reason why you are inetrested and applied for the said assignment. You must be confident, composed and fluent in doing so. If uou do it the road ahead will be quite smooth.Wish you best of luck.

It would depend on the job position. Try to relate the position to your experiences in a subtle way. But don't ramble on incessantly. Be brief and to the point with a smile. Avoid negativity. Good luck!

First the don'ts:

Don't repeat what can be read on your resume or application.
Don't give a history of your personal life.

Now the do's:

Do prepare and be ready for this type of question..which it seems you are doing now...good job!
Do talk about the positives that you bring to this or any job: "I am a person who takes pride in doing a thourough, efficient, complete, above average, etc. job " (pick one or 2).
Do throw in 1 accomplishment that applies to this role.
If applicable talk about educational leadership. "I am the person who was the president of my sorority"

Hope that helps!

Usually they ask this to try and make you more comfortable when they can tell you are really nervous.

Generally they don't want you to talk about any work/relevant experience yet just want to know about your background, where you came from, general jobs/education you have had and what lead you to the job/industry of the job you are applying for

Well, I have asked that question of applicants before. Mostly I get a brief rundown of where they were born and raised, schools they attended and hobbies outside work.

Say this: "I'm a high-flying parakeet with an obsession over dramatic footsteps. I love to bend water and to shovel artichokes. There is nothing that can stop the whales." That ought to keep them guessing.
