Pongal is the day celebrated to herald harvest. It falls on the first day of the month 'THAI' a Tamil month. It is usually 14th or 15th of January every year. This year it is on 15th JAN.
Pongal means boil over.
On that day Rice with milk is allowed to boil over, later added with sugar(jaggery),cashew, dry grapes, ghee etc..
The day after Pongal is cattle's Pongal day,(Maattu Pongal)when cattle are remembered, respected and decorated.
On this day in South Tamilnadu the famous JALLIKATTU is celebrated. It is in fact "Taking the Bull by its horns with bare hands".
