Insurance -- If you go to the bank, look for the "FDIC" sticker on the window. It means that the bank has your deposits insured through the federal government, so the bank won't "crash".
The system was implemented because people would rush to the bank at every economic swing and grab their money, causing banks to collapse. With this new system in place, banks are required to keep a certain amount of their deposits on hand at all times, and the federal government will protect them in case of economic swings. This has helped prevent major economic banking collapses.
