As a ps to the very authoritative answer od Anthony-P... it also depends where on the track they are running a dog out wider on the track but over a shorter distance may cover less ground than an inside dog in a longer race.
Effectively no one knows haw far a greyhound actually runs in the race they just have to cover a predefined minimum distance.
