I'm not to sure, but judging by the trend of how music has gone since the early 50's to now... I would say straight down the toilet. But that is just my opinion. They dont make music like they use too, and no one writes songs with as much heart and feeling as those written 20 or more years ago. Back then people wrote what they felt, and what they had been through, and you could tell it when they sang. Now days you cant even understand 90% of the lyrics. And I know you think I must be an old person to think this way, but trust me, I'm not.

Are you talking about pop music? (pop = popular; what regular people listen to, not what Julliard scholars are dreaming up.)
Welcome to the Post-Modern Era. You're a bit late.
The hits of the 2000's and beyond are the hits of the 60's, 70's, and 90's, just reworked. In some cases, the hits are literally covers of the past hits.
Rock is just neo-hard rock, neo-metal, neo-American, neo-Brit. Pop is just neo-electronica, neo-industrial. Etc. Take a spoon and stir it all up, and you get most other subgenres.
Don't get me wrong, a lot of new music is very catchy. I'll leave the station on a good new song once in a while. But if you don't study your rock history, you think it's all new. It's all derivative, is what it is.
The next revolution of music is waiting for the next revolution in technology, and I mean **Revolution**. I'm talking about "direct to brain" music. Some kind of device-neural interface, a **real** plug in, a la The Matrix. Even so, what would be the **thematic** developments in pop music? Not much will be added to what has Already Been Done.

Trends are generally probably going to stay the same - Catchy, easy to listen to music. On the other hand, more and more each day new styles of music are being created. For example, I make death metal fused with techno. Literally, anything is possible!

I really enjoy my XM radio because I will never never never listen to commercial radio again. The stuff you are being force fed is being done by about two companies and I do not have to listen to it.
