It was his first number while playing at school. Only senior Years at Lower Marion he played at number 33. after he chose number 8 as parallel number to 33. if you divide 8 in to two half's you will get 3 and reversed 3. now he is going there he was starting from. also Phil Jackson said 24 is more than 23, maybe because the want to show that Kobe is better player than Michael Jordan was.

His high school number was 24 and someone with the Lakers had that number already, so he chose 8 instead. Now that he's in the second half of his career, he went back to 24.

Actually, he wore number 8 because he idolized one Italian player as a kid. Mike D'Antoni(Kobe grew up in Italy).
But somehow as if fate turns out to be interesting, Mike D'Antoni's Suns defeat the Lakers of the first round playoff.
Thus, Kobe needed a change of image and probably pissed off because Mike D'Antoni's team defeat the Lakers; He decided to change to his old jersey number.
And I'm a Kobe fan, mind you
