Purely subjective...
I'm a fan of 2D fighters, so I like the early MKs (UMK3 is my fave) and stuff by Capcom and SNK. Lately, I've been fond of the Guilty Gear series.
I like 3D games, but I consider them to be different beasts, and like them for entierly different reasons.

Soul Calibur is amazing as far as customization, but mortal kombat definitely better gameplay. Tekken definitely does not suck b/c of the TONS of possible combos and moves that other fighters just can't reach, but it could be a bit cheesy compared to other fighters, except maybe doa, which is the cheesiest possible cheese of all cheeses.

I love mortal kombat, thought I am afraid nowadays it seems to of faded in nostalgia valley. I saw the neweset one they came out with couple months ago and I ahve no idea who anyone is anymore. I saw Liu Kang was a zombie, and about, oh, twenty other people I do not know. My fave was Mortal Kombat Trilogy. But I still remember putting in the DULLARD code for MK1 on Genesis. But anymore, I go to DOA for my fighting games. I like the being able to counter attack and all the special moves you are able to perform and to pull some off have to have fast reflexes and know the combination. Plus the fighting is intense as can be! Talk about challenging! Put that game on hardcore mode and you'll be screaming at the TV in no time!

Don't get me wrong, I love MK but I think the best fighter ever is Virtua Fighter 4. Love the different fighting styles and how they really effect gameplay. Plus the graphics...great for a game, never mind just a fighting game.

The new Mortal Kombats aren't that great but the old ones were amazing. My fav was probably MK3. But today...I prefer Soul Calibur.

I liked Mortal Kombat before the 3D version came out. But the series (game) is better than virtual fighter, tekken, and all those weird titles.

Well I like the characters on Mortal Kombat and the fighting styles, but the game starts cheating as the difficulty goes up in offline mode. It delays your move (split second), to block or attack before you. That's kinda cheap

I'm with you, I love the MK series. I dunno, I've always like it better than Tekkan or DOA. Maybe it's the blood, or maybe it's the fact that after I defeat my opponent I get a chance to cut their head off, like I earned it. I'd say my favorite is MK4 on Nintendo 64-classic.
I also liked the Killer Instinct series
