Cornelia Funke has written some interesting stories. So far I've on read "Dragon Rider" by her but I've heard "Inkheart" and "Inkspell" are very good as well. I'm not entirely sure if this is a "higher level of reading" but they seem fun.

You could also try "I am the Messenger" by Marcus Zuzak.

Try Pat Conroy's Beach Music
Anita Shreve's Pilots wife. I could recommend many more but I think you just need a change of authors and these are two of the best in my book!!

You should definately try Dragonlance novels by Maragaret Weis if you like Science Fiction or even if you don't. She's an amazing author and her stories are extremely orginal and theres always something out there for everyone.
