In case people don't know the whole story, Denzel Washington refused to do a love scene with Julia Roberts in the film "Pelican Brief." He said it was because "Black women are not often seen as objects of desire on film. And they are my core audience."
Was this a racist decision? My heart says no, because it was intended to be positive, to not take power away from a group (in this case, black women). My head, however, says that any decision based specifically on race is, by definition, racist. (I said the decision was racist, not that he was. There is a difference.) I don't think it was a good decision (it compromised the movie, anyway). There is a point to be made, however, that very few movies succeed if they depict a positive romantic relationship between people of two different races. That needs to change.
By the way, he has done love scenes with white women since then.
And to those who say it's okay if he isn't attracted to white women, that isn't the point. He can be attracted to whomever he likes. This is about doing a job - filming a movie. Do you think that Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger chose the roles in Brokeback Mountain because they were attracted to each other? It was a good story, with good characters, which made it a great job.
By the way, to the answerer below regarding the Pelican Brief - I appreciate your opinion. In the book, they do eventually develop a romantic relationship. It isn't the point of the whole movie, but ignoring the attraction between them did change the dynamic.

No I don't think it's racist at all. I bet though if he were white refusing to do a scene with a black actress people would think so.

Ive never heard that. I am a white girl and I say its not racist, its just his decision. Not the smartest cuz acting is his job and those scenes with white women are just a part of it but he is rich so it doesnt matter.

I agree with the person before me when it comes to her explanation of the racism question, but not when it comes to the movie The Pelican Brief.
Julia Roberts character had just seen what she thought was the love of her life blown to bits. Do you really think it would have made the audience identify with her if she slept with the first man who tried to help her?
I think he made a good decision for the movies sake, maybe not so much for the future of cinema.
