Think back to when you were younger, wasn't there always statements made like this about your generation? Every generation thinks that the next one is worse than them.
In the u.k the biggest ever teenage riot was on brighton beach during the 70's.
I think you'll find that the world was a more violent place years ago teachers could practically beat children and get away with it the only difference is that you didn't hear so much about it because it was common practise!
There are a hell of alot of off the rails teenagers but there is also a hell of alot of older generations that are the same! How many teenage serial killers do you know??
And as for gangs? look back to the 50's, violent gangs were a way of life even back then.
Kids will more often than not live up to the opinions that people have of them, dont judge all tennagers on a small minority.

The trouble with today's kids are they are spoiled! Most do not do chores around the house without getting paid for it. Look at how many young kids have cell phones! Look at how many come on here expecting people to do their homework for them. Even with all the knowledge of the Internet.....they need a person's input.
Look at how many kids get into trouble, and it's the parents that say "My child would never do such a thing!" I know kids that can't tie a shoe lace...tell time on a regular clock and can not make change. Around here we are suppose to find things to keep kids 'busy' during the summer so they don't get bored.
I agree,,,I think most of it is through lazy parenting skills. And some is from the parents thinking that they want their kids to have it better than they had it as a child. But is that really the best thing for kids? How about teaching them to do a little community service? Or finding elderly people that need help?
No, I don't think it's all music.....they said the same thing in the 50s. I think it goes way beyond that. But if something isn't done....can you imagine what it is going to be like in 20 years?

I would agree that teenagers today are less respectful than even a generation ago. I don't really know what the answer is. I'm sure part of it has to do with more single parent families and/or households with two working parents. I also think cellphones, instant messaging, iPods, and other similar items play a role. I manage a movie theatre and one of the main things I see is teenagers who have absolutely zero respect for other people in the theatre. They'll be chatting with their friends or chatting on their cell phone or texting, or going in and out.
That's not to say there aren't a lot of teens who are respectful, I just think there is a much greater percentage than with previous generations.

The main causes are 1. the government (for saying we can't discipline our kids) and 2. lazy parents. I have kids, I spanked my daughter once when she was little, it stuck. When my son came along, he did something wrong and my daughter spanked him and told him "momma don't like when you are bad" (she was 5). That was it. Both kids behaved themselves. I knew what my kids were doing, who they were doing it with and I stuck with it. Now, they are adults and I am damn proud of them. My son joined the military and my daughter married and has 2 beautiful grand kids. (they call all the time and don't hate me for being tough on them) All a parent has to do is care about what their kids do and make sure if you punish them (not necessarily spanking), you stick with it. I hate seeing parents tell their bratty kids, "you stop that or you're not watching T.V.", then nothing...........the kids keeps doing what they want, knowing the parent is full of hot air and no punishment will occur. Music has nothing to do with this, my parents hated the music I listened to and it didn't cause me to do bad things.

After reading a lot of the answers already posted on here I have seen mixed emotions on the subject of upbringing and past and present ways. And this generation of teenagers is a major decline. There are no real role models, not even along the line of parents anymore. There are no real men for boys to look up to, hard-working, backbreakers who get up at dawn and work until evening to put a meal down for his family. Now it can be handed to you with a sob story at the welfare offices. And the sad thing is, people who really actually need on welfare are most time denied from the moochers. And the children grow up in this enviroment, one excuse after the other and how it is all crap and "what the point of it all is"!
There is no real role model for young girls anymore either. The majority of women think all their purpose is is on the bed and going back to the clubs and parties later on in the night. The so-called "role models" I see are those sIuts in hollywood that are known as Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie! Yeah going to clubs and partying all night long having two kids at home is a perfect example of how girls should behave and what boys should find "attractive".
For the hip hop music, it holds as much influence as does the craptacular "emo" and "alternative" music does. God, in that genre all they do is repeat the same thing and usually it is along the lines of depression and blaming everyone else and they are failing in life because everyone is out to make them do that. IT IS YOUR ACTIONS AND CHOICES THAT DECIDE IF YOU FAIL IN LIFE OR NOT!! AND BLAMING SOCIETY AND ADULTS IS NOT THE REASON YOU ARE A UNGRATEFUL LITTLE BRAT!
TV is nothing but violence and sex, movies is just a hardcore version of TV anymore if anything, TV runs very close behind. Music, one genre calls women biches, whores, and objectify them to no end, while at the same time showcasing gang activity, violence, and breaking the law everytime one steps outside the house. Whilst the other genre likes to blame any form of authority and like to rebel against said authority figures. Allow them to push their faults and mistakes off onto other people, because after all, it is their fault no one has responsibility for their actions anymore. God forbid that.
Everything is backwards in the world anymore. Parents are not parents anymore, they think they are still in high school or something anymore. They push their kids off onto grandparents, friends, or other family members. They do not properly raise their kids. Discipline is now looked down on, cannot even spank a child for bad actions or choices without being accused of "child abuse". GO TOA PRISON AND FIND A SEXUAL CHILD PREDATOR AND SEE WHAT A REAL CHILD ABUSER IS YOU IDIOTS!!
I say bring back discipline in schools, real teachers that are role models and actually want to teach and be mentors to the students and not a detention handing, lazy, mundane "teacher" who sits at their desk and constantly yells at students. Remind the hollywood so-called "role models" they are constantly being on watch by cameras everywhere they go so find their dignity somewhere in their toilet at home and take a shower and compose yourself with some dignity and sophistication when you step out in public. Take music and mature movies the route video games have gone and make it a law to ID 17 or younger kids to buy them unless with an actual PARENT! Not jsut some adult they find to buy the game for them! Crack down on alcohol and cigarette sellers at stores and arrest them the minute they sell to an underage, give proper punishment and/or fine.
Of course, that isn't going to happen at all.Because according to the "professionals" kids and teenagers nowadays need to "act out" and be "independant" not held down by parents or authority figures! Scums!

Bad people enjoy doing bad things. Kids often do bad things because too often they're allowed to get away with it, which in turn makes them feel that they're untouchable or invincible. There are no deterrents which make them think twice.

Lazy parenting for the most part. Parents don't take the time to properly kick their kid's *** anymore (and for a couple reasons). fear of social services, and laziness. Kid's aren't shown checks and boundaries at a young age anymore, they're shown a TV remote, and a mouse pad. Plain and simple, I'm glad my dad whooped my *** as a kid, and if i have kids and they get out of line, i plan to do the same.

Most people that have children especially in the African American community do not become married or good parents. This is the problem. No proper up bringing.
