I almost always have one whenever I eat without a glass of water beside me. Is it just a natural occurrence to everybody?

Yes it is, you can take a really deep breath which might work, if not drink water upside down and they will be gone

Drink water upside down! Get a glass of water, stand up, bend over, drink from the opposite side that you normally would. Take a few sips and you should be cured!

Hold your breath. When the next hiccup comes, hold again right after the hiccup. Don't force a lot of air in... just take a normal breath and hold gently until the next urge---or until you would normally need a breath--- and repeat until the hiccups stop.

Here's what I do for hiccups:
Fill a glass of water (no ice). Take a paper towel and lay it over the top of the glass. When you grab the glass, put your hands around the paper towel (it drapes over the sides) to make sure it stays put. Then, drink! Drink as much as you can (not tooooo fast) without breathing. The combination of you not breathing and the paper towel leaves you just drinking water, not air. It should work!

I have always gotten into a horizontal position and then made a conscious effort to feel that I am in my favorite location in the world...Hawaii...(and I mean REALLY feel that I am there, I feel the sun & the Trade Winds on my face, feel the palm tree at my back, feel the sand underneath me...) and then when I have relaxed enough, they subside naturally.
