I'm thinking about getting a new computer (most likely a Dell Dimension) but I want to make sure I am ready for the Windows Vista OS update. I keep hearing that 2 GB of RAM and a 256MB video card is optimal for Windows Vista, but what does this mean exactly? I am very much into video editing, so I will need as much RAM as I can get. Would getting 2GB be just enough to support Vista? Or would it leave me ample amount to work with for the memory-intensive task of editing video? Should I get 4GB to make sure?

Oh yes and the processor. What kind of processor and what speed processor would I need to handle 1GB, 2GB, 4GB of RAM?

Generally, it depends on how much money you have. Although, 2 GB is fine for editing most people generally try and get 4GB. This is not usually supported by retail computers might I add. As for your processor, I recommend getting a Core 2 Duo. They are very nice when handling large groups of processes or even individual programs. Intel makes these so you may find them with Dell although Dell recently made a large-scale switchover to AMD, so I'm not very sure about this. Also, for video editing; Make sure to get a Radeon. Radeon is generally better for video quality and such. Nvidia has always been good for graphic intensive performance. That's why you hear a lot of people use Nvidia for games, but if you noticed ALL the next-gen game consoles use Radeon (Including the Wii).

As a general rule, you can never have too much RAM, especially for heavy tasks like video processing... but system requirements vary, depending on which version of Vista you plan to install.
MS actually specify 512MB as a minimum, but, obviously, the more you have, the better. If 4GB is an option, go for it.

2 Gb RAM will be sufficient for Vista. Make sure you processor is 2.8 ghz+ so that it works smooth. Also note to have a good Video card.
Vista experience index and performance greatly rely on video card. From my personnel experience i heard that vista runs fine on AMD athlon than on intel.
I use Vista in my computer and it runs fine.(3.2 ghz, 2Gb RAM and 256 Nvidia card).

2 gb is more than ample, 4 gb is total overkill. a 256 mb card is good, but you need to make sure it's a good card, not some crap card with 256mb. get the ati x1300pro, but for any gaming you should get a card off of newegg, at least a geforce 7600gt, preferably a 7900gs or ati x1950 pro(costs more than 7900 but better).

Optimal means in order to run. Like how windows xp's is 128 MB and Windows 95 is 32MB. I would get four if you are going to do high end media.
