Basically, Haig was a cavalry officer thrust into a mechanized war;
1. Somme offensive was ill-suited because he was sending men into a so-called "meat grinder", 2. heavy casualties at Verdun in the trenches, 3. anti- machine gun and anti-tank, 4. look under Sir Douglas Haig under Yahoo Search.
