Do you already have a home Network? If not, I recommend (for being future proof) getting a wireless router and connecting your PC and Xbox through the router via Ethernet cable (or if you buy WLAN adapters for your PC and XBOX via Wireless LAN).

If the router is too expensive for you, get a crossover Ethernet cable (it's important to buy a "crossover" cable). Connect your Xbox with the Network card in your PC.

Now download Windows Media Player 11. It has the neccesary component already included to get video and audio and pictures to your Xbox.

After you installed the Media Player, open the Media blade in the dashboard and choose Music. Then choose "Computer". The Xbox will then look for a PC and find your PC.

Then open Media Player on your PC and right click on "Media Library". Choose "Media Sharing...". There should be your Xbox 360. Allow the Xbox and you should be able to get your Media streamed to the Xbox.

As first person answered but it's easier if you download windows media player 11 and do it through that. It's hardly worth it anyway. the sound quality through the ethernet cable is pretty bad and it only plays wmv video files i think. You would be much better connecting an external hard drive.
