We moved in in November and something had eaten most of one Rhododendron but not others. The leaves fell off and now there are new buds but the little monsters have moved to surrounding Primroses, still no other plants as yet. Can't see anything on the plants, any ideas would be welcome.

I live in Cumbria, UK. The leaves are eaten in small patches from the inside to the outside.

Could be caterpillars as sometimes the butterfly lays one egg on each plant. The Caterpillar is highly camouflage and has changed into a chrysalis (pupa) by the time you notice anything. Look for small black droppings under the primrose. Otherwise spray immediately with a broad spectrum insecticide.

If its in the Northern 1/2 of the country, its most likely deer.

If its on the bottom 4-5 ft of plants, thats it.

A number of different deer repellents are available to spray to give it a bad taste.

Organics like hot pepeer sprays, egg mixtures, and even garlicy stuff.

Is it little notches taken out of the leaves?? If so, it may be vine weavils...they come out mostly after dark and can be picked off the plants...or use Tangle Foot.

I suggest you take a few of the leaves to your local garden centre.
