The Beatles. Love them or not, they changed the face of rock music, in a way like Elvis, which has never been emulated since. Inventive, creative, rule-breaking, experimental, excellent muscianship, a finger on the pulse of what was old and what was new, melodic, rhythmic and lyrical brilliance - the Beatles were IT.

A close 2nd comes David Bowie - like the Beatles, a true innovator of style and substance.

Funny though - my fave band at the moment is Placebo! Yet they don't hold a candle to the Beatles, Elvis or Bowie.

Whoa!

The Beatles

This band has had more influence on music, culture, lifestyle and fashion than any other group in history. Their influence was WORLDWIDE. Stores were filled with Beatles merchandise. Bubble gum cards, candy, lunch boxes, combs, shampoo, even nylon hose had the group's name and likeness everywhere. This band had 4 and 5 songs in the Top 10 at one time. They caused "riots" everywhere they went. They were dominating.

After being broken up for nearly 40 years... they still sell music. If not for The Beatles, rock music would be 25 years behind the point where we now find it. Their advances in studio recording were unimaginable. (Sgt. Pepper's was recorded using an 8 track! That's all they had back then) They may not have been the greatest "technical" musicians but they are the greatest band. You probably wouldn't even be listening to most of today's current bands if it hadn't been for them. They've inspired 3 generations of today's musicians to pick up an instrument and learn to play. If not for The Beatles I would say half of the bands listed above wouldn't even exist. Other musicians were either directly or indirectly influenced by The Beatles or another later group that was influenced by them.

Other bands who were performing during The Beatles' time were in awe at what was coming out of Abbey Road Studios. There had never been anything like it before.
