Limewire offers a lot of free stuff. But there is also Bear Share, Kazza, Morpheus, and a slew of other P2P sites that will allow you to download.
But if you are from the US its all illegal to download music without paying so watch your back.

You know, I think tis new technology is over rated. When I was young we just used to tape record music off the radio, or borrow it from our mates. Much more sociable!
