I asked this many years ago in history at school.. (yeah.. made me popular eh! lol) ...anyway.. back to the Q: I was told they used old rags.. but I see you already have that answer alot so I'll tell you something else... In ancient times (don't know when exactly) But they actually believed that menstruating women turned the milk sour !!

they used cotton but before that they used rags and before that they just sat in one place for days till it stopped and before that it was the guys that had periods.

Actually, women did have a sort of primitive tampon. In ancient Rome, it was common for them to insert clumps of lamb's wool into...you know...their 'canals'.
In some cultures, women were forced to stay in bed, or in a menstruation pit, during their cycles.

My grandmother told me that they before pads and tampons they used rags. That is where the term "on the rag" came from.
