1600 cc petrol injection stalls EVERY time I slow to a stop. engine starts again straight away but sometimes takes a couple of goes. occaissionally engine races slightly and doesn't cut out. one time it wouldn't start again at all. previous owner used to run the tank empty. if its the injectors, are they expensive to unblock?

I used to have the same problem with an old xr3i,it happened to be a washer with a split in it that was letting too much air into the engine,i would check all pipes, washers etc are intact before paying out for the more expensive stuff.good luck.

Fuel pumps don't usually go wrong, ask a garage to clean out and change your fuel filter as this gets blocked if it isnt changed once a year.
Ask the garage to fit a fuel pressure guage to see if this is a problem if the pressure drop really low when you brake it may be a fuel related problem otherwise its possibly electrical. Does sound like an idle speed problem. Also Reddex will clean your fuel lines and stuff, make it run a bit better.
Hope this helps

start with having the car serviced properly, that should fix the problem although the escort 1600 is known to be sensitive to a water temperature sensor which causes it to stall at tick over, cheap and easy fix tho

check fuel filter first if that dont work, try a quality fuel injector cleanerand for a last resort have the fuel injectors removed and checked
alot of fuel injectors are being offered remanafactored which will reduced the purchase price

I had the same problem with my Renault Laguna. I took it to my garage who confirmed it was the Idle Speed Control Valve.. They took it off and cleaned it out and hey presto all was fixed. Get a good garage to check it out.

Awwww Cap10kirk, that was mean!

Run some Redex through it, that'll unblock your pipes a bit.

My guess is the fuel pump.

If it's the injectors, there are additives you can put in your fuel tank that will degum them. I guess you can start there first.
