Yes it is true for some reason. Why? Because that is the way it goes - probably from some ancient breeding ritual ingrained yet lost in out brains. How do I know? I went to college and lived in a dorm! I also learned at college that the same thing happens to rodents that live together. Hmmmmmmm. What does that tell us? Me - nothing.

Yes, sometimes; it is called menstrual synchrony. It doesn't always happen, however. Here is bit of basic, brief info about synchrony when it does occur...
Synchronous menstruation was first described in 1971 by researchers McClintock and Stern. It is a proven occurrence, borne out by additional studies. Though they are still unclear as to exactly why it occurs, the most widely accepted theory is that it is due to pheromones. Others think it's due to some evolutionary carry-over from prehistoric times, when it was common for men to take multiple mates to ensure the survival of the species, but the pheremone theory makes more sense...

Ye sit is true. I have 7 children, 5 of which are girls and three of them have "started". We all start within a few days of each other. I guess my system is very sensitive because these girls have me all messed up! :) They all start right on their schedules and I am always bouncing back and forth. Sometimes I even have it twice a month and others its once for only 2-3 days. I have no idea why it happens. I wish there was a way to make it stop so I could be on a "schedule" with it again.
When I got pregnant with my first, my best friend's mom actually started having two periods a month. (I was always at their house and very close to her, too) Then my best friend got cancer and the treatments caused her to lose her period for a year or so and her mom started having her periods three weeks out of the month. As soon as I gave birth, she went back to two and as soon as her daughter got well, everything went back to normal for her. Weird, huh? :)

Among women living closely together, the onsets of menstruation may tend to synchronise somewhat.
This Menstrual synchrony was first described in 1971, and possibly explained by the action of pheromones in 1998.
However, subsequent research has called this conclusion into question.

Brooklynn is historically correct. The physical reason is because of Pheromones. It's labled the "Dormitory Effect" by psychologists if you want to look it up. It usually takes a couple months to fall into place. It's actually a pretty crazy thing! But that is b/c women are amazing!! =)

it is very true. Apparently, women who live or work together give off certain pheromones that trigger a change in their body chemistry to where they have their cycles at the same (or very close to the same) time each month!

As a woman, I can say that it IS true! I currently live on my own but when I had flatmates (all female) within a few months we all had our monthlies at/around the same time of the month. I dunno why that happens...it just does!
