Every computer I've had at one time or another sounds like a geiger counter when it is thinking. I just bought a Gateway with an Intel Duo processor, and it is normally a quiet and very nice system. However every once in awhile it starts making a sound similar to a geiger counter. The sound seems to happen when it is thinking really hard, like when I'm trying to access a website that is currently down.

thoughts?

Almost every hard drive makes these noises. Most newer models are quieter than their predecessors. A few manufacturers take pride in their hard drives being almost undetectable such as the Seagate Barracuda line of drives. The noises you hear are normal. If they get louder or unusually repetitive followed by errors then they can be associated with what is known as the "clicks of death".

The experiences you are having with these noises occurring when you are accessing a website that is currently down is most likely caused by your Antivirus program running a scan that causes your web browser to time out when surfing. My Antivirus runs startup object and critical areas scans upon startup on day intervals. I have slow internet progression when the scan begins because it is scanning my browser cache among other areas, causing time outs. I don't hear my hard drive since its quieter than my exhaust fan, but its the same thing.

Theres nothing wrong even if it doesn't seem right! If it doesn't make you happy then make it take flight!

This is nothing to do with gateway PC. Normally it sounds like a Geiger counter because of the hard drive.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

All computers made after 2004 come equipped with geiger counters in the very rare chance that the owners are radiocactive. You are radioactive. Go to your closest bomb shelter and do not come out until the year 5400.

Haha "thinking". That makes me giggle.

Anyway, the reason your computer is making clicking noises when it is proccessing is because that is when it is accessing its harddrive. The little heads that read/write the data onto your hard drive click as they move around inside your machine.

The more proccessing ("thinking") your computer does, the more it clicks, it is completely natural and expected for a computer.

It's either the sound of the processor turning on and off (thats how computers work, 1's and 0's and they record this buy the processor turning on and off), but is more likely the sound of your hard drive writing to itself.

Hard disk access. As the data on the disk fragments over time, the disk heads need to move more - and also as it wears out - which makes the sound you describe.

You got it in a nutshell. your computer is simply thinking very hard!

Its just an optical reader moving backwards and forwards to different parts of your disk very fast.

it is your hard disk trying to access info quickly. a good way to decrease this is to DEFRAGMENT you hard disk frequently(about every 2 weeks) here is how you can do it,
right click on a hard disk drive, go to properties, click on the 'tools' tab, and click on the defragment button.
hope it helps.
