A tulip is a bulbous plant. It is from the monocot family. That is it produces bulbs but also has lateral veined leave and the seed is single instead of having two parts like peas. It flowers in the spring and summer and the bulbs are dormant in winter. Its original ancestors come from Mediterranean countries such as Turkey and Greece. It was commercialize in Holland and the rest of Europe and today there are many colours and varieties.
Try to get fat bulbs when buying otherwise it would not flower for you and instead will only produce leaves and new bulbs for next year. In Holland tulips are beheaded, that is the flower stalk is removed so that the strength goes to the bulb so those who buy them can have flowers the next year.

The tulip is a flower that grows out of a dry capsule. (sort of looks like an onion) When it's flowering period is over, the flower dies, but the capsule lives on under the ground and will grow a new flower the next year.
It's not an exotic plant, as in grows in any moderate climate.
Holland is famous for it's tulips, but actually it's an arab flower. The word tulip comes from the persian language.

Any of almost 4,000 varieties of about 100 species of cultivated bulbous herbaceous plants making up the genus Tulipa in the lily family, native to Eurasia. Among the most popular of all garden flowers, the tulip produces two or three thick, bluish-green leaves clustered at the base of the plant. The usually solitary inverted bell-shaped flowers have three petals and three sepals. Colors range from white through yellows and reds to brown and deep purple to almost black. Streaked blossoms get their streaks from a harmless virus infection that causes the color to disappear in patterns, letting white or yellow show through.

Its a bulb that loks a bit like a daffodil bulb. They have tall stems with a cup /bell shaped flower and come in a huge range of colours such as black, white, green, red, purple and everything between. They are definitely not tropical but can be grown in the tropics if you lift them each year and refrigerate them for a period of time to simulate a cold winter. I leave mine in the ground all year just like any other bulb but our winter temperatures dont get above 15c. There are specialist commercial retailers that you can find on line and they often have helpful fact sheets on how to grow tulips. You can generally find excerllent gardning books at the local library including advice on how to grow tulips on hot climates or how to "force" them to flower out of season.
