I have a 2004 Toshiba laptop which cuts out at random times and without warning. When I turn it on again it will sometimes cut out immediately and other times it's fine. Can anybody tell me how to deal with this or should I just buy a new one?

Use a strong vacuum cleaner with a narrow tip (to increase suction) and vacuum the gunk out of the copper heat sink (usually on the rear of the laptop). That is the only way to improve internal air circulation without taking the laptop apart and replacing the fan.

Check the Toshiba website. Your laptop is old enough you may have the battery that catches fire from overheating.

Remove the battery when you are on AC power. This way, recharging the battery wont overheat the motherboard and you can use the laptop until the replacement battery arrives.

Sorry, don't know the cause but have a suggestion that may save you some heartache in teh future. If you have important files, docs, pictures on the laptop, back them up now to a disc or stick. I lost lots of photos of my kids due to a similar problem.

It will more than likely mean that your battery has blown, if you take the battery out of the back of your laptop, plug it in as normal, if it works, then you have your answer.....battery is dead.....I had EXACTLY the same problem

If your computer is 3 years old then the bettery might be crapping out. But it could also be an issue with the wiring inside the laptop, in which case you should replace the whole machine.

What's the battery status? Sounds like that might be wearing out. Best bet is probably get it checked out by an expert - or ring Toshiba helpline?

I had a similar problem and it was dust in the cooling system.
Remove all panels from the underside and soft brush all the dust out and vacuum.also get a dust blaster aerosol fom comp store.
This MAY be the problem.
good luck

I had a similar problem with my MacBook, some how, I had set the battery settings to US and not UK, no idea how I managed it but, it was charging but not charging, as soon as I set it back to the UK setting, the problem was solved, may be not the same as your problem but worth a look.

It is your laptop battery. Try to change a new one and will work fine.
