The movie is probably late 70's or 80s. The crew have a scanner which tracks the alien in the ship's vents and the crew take turns to go after it. But it ends up killing them each time.
At the end of the film the alien actually becomes helpful and has telekenetic power which it use to help the remaining crew fix the ship.I rememeber a scene where the alien levitates a spanner (or tool) over to one of the crew members.
I also think the alien was pink and resembles Crang from teenage mutant ninja turtles (i.e. looks like a pink pile of sh!t with eyes).
If anyone answers Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 or Alien Resurrection, I'll be very dissapointed...

can only think it may be Dark Star directed by john carpenter, the alien looks bit like a big pink beach ball

It sounds like you were watching an old tape of Alien, but someone recorded over the ending with Alf or something.

Maybe the film Dark star did it also have a bomb in it that kept arming it self great film sorry if its not the one your after but if you find your film title let the rest of us know then we can all watch it
