I had this same problem, give it a good varnish ( the spray on kind ) & it will look as good as new.

Remove the paint with a good paint remover available at any hardware or home improvement store and work with the natural wood. I have hardwood floors which I love to clean. In my experience I've learned that what I use for my hardwood floors holds true for all my wood surfaces. I use two products, a 'cleaner' and a 'shiner'. Made by Kleenco "old time - Wood Floor Wash" concentrated wood cleaner, you can get at www.kleenco.com and Weiman Natural Lemon Oil Furniture Polish with Sunscreen, that I've purchased at grocery stores and home improvement stores. I no longer pay any attention whether it's for floors or furniture, if it's a good wood product, it's works on any wood surface. I'll bet removing the paint and using these two products would make your old wardrobe look rich.
