Yes, this symbol has generated debate and controversy since it was designed as part of the bill in post-Revolutionary days. David Ovason has a fairly good book on the subject:

For a look at the possibility that Freemasonry is responsible for it:

Intriguing stuff! Good luck!

In 1782 the Eye of Providence was adopted as part of the symbolism on the reverse side of the Great Seal of the United States. The Eye was introduced by the original design committee of 1776, and is thought to be the suggestion of the artistic consultant, Pierre Eugene du Simitiere.
On the seal, the Eye is surrounded by the words Annuit CÅptis, meaning "He [God] is favorable to our undertakings". The Eye is positioned above an unfinished pyramid with thirteen steps, representing the original thirteen states and the future growth of the country. The combined implication is that the Eye, or God, favors the prosperity of the United States.
The Great Seal is used to endorse official United States documents. As such, it is reproduced, along with the Eye of Providence, on the back of every one dollar bill.

Yep. This is one of the symbols associated with the Free Masons. I think it may also have been a symbol used by the Illuminanti, a secret sect who believed in sharing all knowledge, even if considered heretical. (Davinci was supposed to be a member).
Says a lot about the origins of the US (Trust no one. Serve the Computer. Keep your laser handy.).

The Pyramid and "Eye"
The Pyramid on the Dollar Bill is missing its "top" or "capstone" (as is the Great Pyramid in Egypt), and above it hovers an "eye" with rays emanating from it. This is believed to be an archetype for God and his relationship to His creation. It is also a representation of the esoteric nature of man, and the the base of the Pyramid forms a trapezoid, which symbolizes the physical form of humanity.
The truncated pyramid bears a striking resemblance to the "Nemes" or "head dress" worn by Egyptian pharaohs. In Egyptian symbolism, what is not visible and beyond name or form is represented by empty space. Unseen divinity is implied by the triangular space (in this case the "All Seeing Eye") above the visible form (the truncated pyramid).
In Sacred Geometry, architects of ancient times incorporated a rectangle (or trapezoid) below a triangle. An example of this is the traditional doorway and triangular roof support still used today, although the esoteric meaning is lost. The doorway (rectangle) represents the elements of our physical nature while the triangle hearkens to our divine nature. The ancients were passionate about embedding esoteric metaphors in architecture and paintings. Perhaps this translated to our currency, as those who designed it were of the same school of thought.
Novus Ordo Seclorum, "New Order of the Ages", declares the banner beneath the Pyramid, and it announces the new government of the United States. This excerpt was taken from a web page explaining the purpose of the Great Seal. It precedes the excerpt below with the following text from our Congress:
An Eye in a triangle surrounded with a glory.
The Eye and the Motto allude to the many signal interpositions
of providence in favor of the American cause. (1782)
The following is taken from the Egyptian "Book of Coming Forth by Day"; better known as the "Book of the Dead" from the same web site ( www.greatseal.com ):
I am in the eye of god, resting in its blue orb. Golden eyelids encircle me.
Eyelashes grow like stalks of dark truth.
I see what I never dared — beyond the bucket banging the well, beyond mountains pushing up dirt. Light shimmers in every blade of grass, gods dance in every leaf, blue and gold fires leap from my pores.
I shine in and out of life.
A thousand forms have I, wholly mine — man and hawk, sycamore, lotus and fig.
I please myself to be born and to die over again.
I walk a flowered path bordered by a million years.
Season to season I change as a leaf greening.
I flow as blood through flesh.
The eye opens and closes, and then . . .
