I wouldn't go at all........ the place has become something of a dump over the last decade. I lived in the Netherlands for 4 years and its a great place, avoid Amsterdam though.....Unless of course you are going there to smoke, in which case the surroundings and stench will be fine for you.

Dam Square ...Leidseplein ...Kalverstraat ...Rijksmuseum ...Van Gogh Museum... Red Light District... Vondel Park...
...just leave your hostel/hotel and walk...EVERYWHERE. It's a fantastic city for just walking around and seeing everything. Trams go all over so whenever you want a quick trip back, jump on a tram that takes you back to Dam Square or the train station.
