Over the top, freely hanging in the wind. Or over the top toward the wall, clinging to it.

Single, no kids, no pets at this time.

It doesn't matter, it is more personal choice, but I say over the top, freely hanging in the wind. It is much easier to grab ahold of.

It seems to be a personal choice but I prefer it hanging free in the wind.
BUT: I know how the toilet paper producers suppose the paper to be used: For yure you know toilet paper with famous quotations printed on them, for easy reading while doing the 2nd most important thing in life. When you place the paper so that you can read the roll it will hang free in the wind. So thats the political correct way to use toilet paper.
Also, if you have a free falling cover above the roll, when you have it hanging against the wall, the roll sometimes gets stuck under the cover.
FREE IN THE WIND!!!

I suppose it's all about having a personal preference and my preference is over the top freely hanging in the wind. I was a desk clerk / night auditor in a motel for many years and the housekeepers were always instructed to leave the TP over the top with the edges folded in to the middle to form a "V" because it looked neater and it was supposed to assure the occupants of the room that it had been cleaned.

In any fine hotel you will notice that all toilet tissue is typically dispensed over the top and NOT against the wall. Typically it is folded neatly into a point or other configuration as to offer a clean and neat presentation to the next guest when they arrive in the room.
If we judge by "professional" standards then this is the method that is used most often in a professional setting.

What you do at home is your business, I say leave it on the counter and roll it around sideways on your hand, making sure you don't have the "poke a finger thru" syndrome by using the cheap stuff.

Over the top, freely hanging. It's a pain to have to get it unstuck from the wall...and once you have kids like I do, you'll find out. See, they don't tend to be as "clean" about their business and when they go swiping at the wall to get at it, they tend to leave...well, streaks...sometimes. Of course they get better as they get older. Mine are 5 and 7 now, and I think we're way passed that part...but I had to clean a lot of walls whenever the TP went over the back side of the roll.

I'd have to agree with the over the top, hanging in the wind. It's not only easier to take some off the roll that way but It also looks much neater, in my opinion.

My wife and I have fought over this for twenty years, so I know the answer to this one: The roll is positioned with the paper over the top so that when pulled, the paper rolls outward and comes straight down. And, it looks nice and tidy also!
