The Comma originates to1586, it is Latin meaning "short phrase," and from Greek komma .

The primary use of the comma is to let the reader know when a sentence calls for a brief pause, otherwise; it would be like someone rambling on and on. The comma reinforces grammatical structures and grammatical units, is useful when making a list, useful after introductory phrases, and for dates and addresses etc.

It's a pause, as commas are our friends and can be used in quite a few different ways, especially in informal writing, using this as an example.
