Can a goalie be called for a high stick if he hits a player in the face while trying to make a save? Assuming that the puck was in the air above the crossbar, but would sink and go in the net just under it. The goalie is in the crease, but the player is not.

yes. the goalie can still be called for a highstick even if he's making a save. he is responsible for the stick at all times. it rarely happens, but it has. it's just like a player following through on a shot, he would still get called for the penalty as well.

By definition of what you say, the goalie isn't making a save because a puck above the crossbar is not a shot on goalat that point, thus cannot be saved. You cannot safely make the assumption the puck would go into the net unless the puck is lobbed into the air and landing on line to go into the net, and at that point, any smart goalie would try to catch the puck, not swat it out of the air with his stick, because if he misses, well, everyone here knows how a puck can bounce.

Not only would he be able to be called for high sticking, he also played the puck with a high stick.

The rule's state that every player on the ice, including the goalie, need to be in control of their sticks at all times. So if he were to hit the player in the face, following the rules, you would be lead to one of two conclusions: Since he's in control of his stick, he hit him intentionally, so a penalty is warranted. Or he lost control of his stick, which also constitutes breaking the rules, and a penalty is awarded.

I am a referee for minor hockey, and yes it is the goalie's responsibility to have control of his stick. If he saves it properly, he won't have to hit someone in the face.

Anyone remember when John Leclair was going behind the net just as Brodeur was catching the puck and sending it around the way Leclair was coming? Brodeur's stick rode ride up leclairs face and gave him a nasty cut from his chin, across his face up to his foreheard.....it was brutal!
